Belated Tito update: from a baked potato to a spagetthi squash (whatever that is)

[disclaimer: excuse the mistakes. Swim outweighed the editing…]

It’s been a long time since Mother updated this blog, and she’s going to blame it squarely on her inability to concentrate on much else other than her doctorate, that threatened to be finished for the past 5 weeks, and otherwise being blissfully pregnant. At times her concentration levels does not always allow her to be clever after writing a piece of her D. So here goes a birds view of the past, what is it, 5 weeks, with a bit more emotion too it (blame it on the D, blame it on hormones – I’m spoiled with a choice of excuses that I exploit to the maximum, in the meantime re-enforcing all the stereotypes that surround me). Anyway, there are things I think about those moments when I’m not pondering on the idea of compensation for expropriation under the Constitution. They mostly pertain to Tito. So, I’m either expropriating or expecting. I thought that I would do the normal run-down of what vegetable type Tito’s been the past 5 / 6 weeks, before proceeding to the “confession booth”, where I spill my emotions about this Tito vegetable.

At week 17 Tito started out as a baked potato (or turnip, but with the German genes, I’m betting it wanted to be a potato rather), weighing as much as a turnip. This is also the week Tito started to develop sweat glands, something Tito will surely use if the Du Plessis genes are strong enough. This is the week that Tito started packing up the pounds, something that Tito is apparently quite good at. The tummy gurgles and the flattering inside were followed by a loud stomp one morning after I’ve been to the loo, which confirmed my suspicion that I’m being kicked around. The first “real” kick happened early on the Sunday morning while hubby was still asleep, and I just laid there with a big grin on my face.

Tito grew to a bell pepper in week 18. I was supposedly looking fabulous, but I won’t know how that differs from normally J, so I’ll just say I continued to look fabulous, despite my “condition”. Tito can actually hear us by now, and when no-one is looking I tell Tito how strange it is that (s)he is inside me (in Afrikaans). Tito also developed some strong bones, and worked on his/her nerves.

Week 19 was Tito’s week as heirloom tomato and a proportionate human being, that produces vernix caseosa. That’s a fancy word for “fetus wetsuit”. I’m also starting to become a heirloom tomato, expanding at an admiral pace. I threw away all the creams and lotions with paraben in it (which is almost all stretch mark stuff) and since I refuse to use bio-oil (“bio” because they use goose glands or something in it), and bought myself a big bottle of cold pressed olive oil to rub the tummy with. It works wonders, and leave me edible (if I don’t bite back, that is).

Tito was a banana (or a can or red bull…caffeine, hmmmm) in week 20, and saw the halfway mark. I’m getting more and more pregnant now. If we would have wanted to know what sex Tito is, this would be the week where we could start stalking our little flasher. No, we’re not going to find out. And next time someone asks again, we are going to use Kaz Cooke’s advice: we want a giraffe. They can walk and feed themselves two hours after labour. Tito is starting to sleep and wake up and seems to be especially awake after a bit of drinking yoghurt. I have not tried caffeine yet, but Tito’s delight when (s)he gets anything sweet or fruity makes me very fond of eating fruits, and provides the necessary excuse for some chocolate each day. Tito enjoyed a week in the Cederbergs, surviving a swim in the (very) cold rock pools. Probably due to that “fetus wetsuit”. Tito also kicked The Dad, who thinks that a kicking Tito is “echt geil”.

“What’s up doc” is probably Tito’s impression in week 21, Tito’s week as a carrot. A busy carrot that is. That is also the size of a bottle of beer. Hmmmm. Beer. Alcohol-free of course. Tito is now looking like (s)he would look like once (s)he is born, sucking thumb and yawning (when dad talks bullocks, most probably). We also slowly started to prepare Tito’s room – the best room in the house, with a view over the big thorn tree where two rats stay and the squirrels play. I have also found our baby clothes and toys, and look forward to returning to my own childhood again with the little one. I’m not sure how all those 70 style clothes would look on Tito, so I’m contemplating celebrating my 30th next year with a 70’s theme, so that Tito can play the part…

This brings us to week 22, this week. Tito as spagetthi squash. Or as long as a packet of Oreos. Or not. Because, see, we went to the gynea this week to make sure that all momy’s indulgence at her wedding did not cause Tito to have a clef plate, (or whatever it is in English) and he informed us that the baby is a little giant.

Supposedly this is the week when you realize “so, a baby is, like, forever”, and then supposedly the Winnie-the-pooh realization that “forever is such a long time”. I must say that realization struck me in the loo at home, and again in the waterfront loos when I saw those two stripes. I will never be without Tito, even if Tito is not with me all the time. Other than that I have no remarkable cravings, I don’t eat much more than usual (except if it’s a bowl of ice-cream), but I am having heart burn. Strangely enough not after the curry of last night, but otherwise I sound like a bunch of male students drinking beer. Beer. Hmmmm…. Alcohol-free, of course. I should supposedly start packing my hospital bag, but I think I will wait for the January sales to buy a fashionable bag for this purpose ;-)

The scan was über-cool. Tito was alive and kicking and not at all too happy with the gynea cramping his/her style with the sonar, although the sonar caught a glimpse of Tito smiling. All the bits and pieces are there, the heart has four (I think) chambers, everything else is fine. Tito has 2 x 5 fingers and 2 x 5 toes, the toes attached to two huge feet to go with the two huge calves. A front row rugby player without a doubt, whether a boy or a girl! Tito is supposed to be 500g, but according to the sonar Tito is a whopping 620g. That matches Tito’s equally big head. Expected weight at delivery is 4kg +. I think it’s karma, for the wounds I, as a 4.5kg baby, inflicted on my mother.

Things that I never knew about being pregnant:

  • That the uterus hardens at times. When this happens, it feels as if there is a melon (well, it’s becoming a small watermelon now) inside my tummy.

  • That a nipple does not have one hole from which the milk comes, like a bottle – it’s like a showerhead.

  • That the bladder is situated under the uterus.

  • That dreams about popping fishes and cats can be über-realistic (and therefore über-scary – every morning I wake up I check my nipples…)

  • That motherhood is a club.

  • That there are days where you don’t have to capacity to care for anybody else but you and the baby.

  • That men’s excitement about the baby grows with the tummy.

  • That the world is divided between breast feeders and bottle feeders, and that they are waging a cold war against each other.

  • That that thing, where everybody touches your tummy – it’s true. And it brings out the inner bitch.

  • That everybody knows something about being pregnant. No, EVERYBODY. And people are not shy about advice (and/or criticism). I am contemplating printing me a T-shirt that says: I have a list of trusted advisors. You are not on it.

  • That a list like this is a never ending list.

So anyway, this is Tito so far, our little baked potato on its way to become a watermelon. Hmmmm….watermelon… Tito’s mom thinks there is something she’s got to eat now.

Bis nächste mal!

ps. i did not enter the confession booth. it has something to do with 30 degrees and a swimming pool.
pps. There are some censored pictures of my (and me hubby’s) tummy on facebook. follow the link to http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2170788&l=9dfd8&id=718510280

Tito week 15 & 16 - Kit Kat, Avos and sneezing

Tomorrow we will cross the 4 month threshold (if your month is only 4 weeks long...) with Tito being 16 weeks old. Till then, we are still 15 weeks pregnant.

During week 15 Tito grew eyebrows and lashes to flutter at me in 15 years time when (s)he says "ag paleeeeez, ma". I am working on it to make them very adorable, to carry me through those years...Tito is also growing hair on Tito's head, something that, judged from Tito's parents, must be a lot of work.

Tito's senses are developing even more, with Tito now being able to sense light. Apparently if you shine a torch at my tummy, Tito will move away from the beam, although I'm not quite sure where Tito will move to! Tito is also swallowing the fluids (yuk), which causes Tito to occasionally hiccup (it does not make me hiccup, though). It's not too yuk for Tito, though, because Tito is still forming taste buds. This is my excuse for only eating yummy food (to ensure a delicate palate for Tito). Swallowing the goo also helps develop Tito's lungs and respiratory tract, which will be helpful once Tito is outside the tummy. Size wise Tito is apparently the size of a Kit Kat and about 60 grams - about the weight of a 60 gram apple. If we wanted to, we could find out whether Tito is a Tito or a Tita, but we will leave that to (round about) the 7th of April.

The coming week Tito will be practicing more facial expressions, some of which will come in very handy when Tito meets Dad the first time...Tito's skin is still see-through since there is no fat between the skin and the meet. Mom will make sure that Tito is fattened up adequately (good excuse to devour that extra tjoppie), so that Tito don't look like a transparent vein-alien when (s)he greets the world. Tito's eyes should be ready to look forward, staring the world straight in the eyes. Oh, and we'll be making toenails this week. By the end of this week, Tito would have gained 15 grams (YOU imagine picking up a quarter of your weight in one week!!) and will be about 12 cm long. That is as long as a 12 cm gherkin. Or an avocado.

As for me - I'm expanding by the day, and although this is frustrating (normal clothes are uncomfortable and maternity clothes are too big [and a bit ambitious]), it is quite amazing. Especially as far as the boobies are concerned. Apart from body & booby expansion, it's also weird that I sneeze more than often, which apparently is due to "rhinitis of pregnancy", what the hell that might be. I'm fine with it just being more sneezing than normal. Oh, and my uterus is travelling! How weird is that?? Other than that Im doing fine (apart from the stress of finishing my doctorate), and being temperamental as it is, I dont know if I’m having pregnancy mood swings. But I can say that Heiko is still standing (with his head on), and we are still happily married. For now at least. I might change in 5 minutes, but it will hopefully stay like this forever.

So, hopefully by the next update I will be closer to being Dr du Plessis, who can bask around in the sun just being radiantly pregnant!

Tito week 13 & 14 (a medium size shrimp swimming in a large grapefruit)

Tito's mom must be suffering from pregnancy dementia. Tito's mom and her friend Thys went to see Tito at what we believed was a 13 week scan. [interlude: the scan on the right explained: the yellow is the head, the green the body, and the big red thing? the feet...) It turns out it was the 10 and a half week scan, although thankfully everything is perfect. Then Tito's mom thought she already DID a week 12, only to find out now that it was only a week 10 and 11. So, anyways, there is a lot to catch up on...

Tito can now be convicted of a crime, having fingerprints and all, and is starting to look less like an alien with the body growing faster than the head. If Tito is a Tita, then she already has 2 million eggs in her ovaries (how tiny they must be!!). At the end of week 13 (now) Tito is about 7.5 cm long and weighs 30 grams.

The week ahead will see Tito pulling faces - frowning (like grandpa) and squinting. Tito will also learn to peepee. Clever Tito might also already be a thumbsucker. Tito is growing at an exceptional rate, tiring mom a bit. At the end of week 14 Tito will be 8.5 cm and a whopping 45 grams. Tito should also have a neck. Oh, and taking after dad, Tito is growing some hair, or lanugo all over Tito's body.

As for mommy - she's got a tiny tummy which can be mistaken for a fat belly by strangers... she's still waiting for the time of comfort and the surge of energy to spill over her, but until then she'll still take 2 cat naps during the day. She's also finishing her doctorate, which adds to the fatigue (and also the reason for some absenteeism...)

Dad is also happy to be united with The Family In Making, and jumped onto the pregnancy wagon by promising not to drink (in solidarity with mom) until Tito is born. A promise that is very hard to keep (also seeing as it was made in an attempt to end a disagreement...). Especially since it seems that Köln just beat M'gladbach on home turf... We'll see. Mommy is looking forward to a proper glass of champers on the day of Tito's birth, which is still 26 weeks away. Till then, she'll marvel in the wonderful wonders of a 2003 sparkling mineral water...

Prost, till next time.

Tito the fig

So, what's happening this week?  Well, Tito went being the size of a grape two weeks ago to being the size of a fig.  If you ask me, that's a lot of growing to do in fruit terms!  Tito is almost human and will soon be able to say amandla with a closed fist.  Ok, perhaps not quite saying it, although, of course, Tito is exceptionally clever with Tito's genes and all... but the hands will really soon be able to open and close in a fist (which, if we were to raise the kid violent, will leave you with the choice of a bitch slap or a butch punch...with no reference to Tito's sex what so ever!!)

We are also making teeth this week, hopefully molded on daddy's!  Unfortunately they will not be out already, no, the pain of that awaits us around my birthday next year (1 x sleep deprived 30th please.  without fries)...on the other hand, with reference to the breastfeeding thing, it is probably not the worst idea... they wait for your tities to toughen up before they take it to the next level...

Tito can also now do some Yoga, or water yoga to be precise, which is what mommy also hope to do in the next two weeks, provided that the temperatures in Stellenbosch lifts above subzero.  Otherwise, you know, that sore-tities-thing might come a lot sooner than she's expecting.

Other than that Tito is starting to hiccup too, which mommy is convinced is contagious, since she finds herself making the funniest of noises in the quitetest of moments.  Tito is now a whopping 4.5cm, clocking in at about 10g (which in salt terms, is a lot!!)

As far as mommy is concerned, she's able to stay awake until way after 9pm now, and she feels the energy levels rising (which is good, seeing that she's handing in her doctorate in 9 weeks...).  She had an energetic and a moody day all-in-one last week, which left her with a headache the next day, so she's dumping the moodiness.  In fact, mommy is ridding herself of any negative forces...she is even ignoring the article she read in a stupid magazine that having a copious amount of alcohol just before and just after conception increases the chance of a "haaslip" (harelip? Lapin, not hänchen...) baby...Oh, and as far as those scary stories are concerned, since Tito made the 10 week mark, the chances of Tito not meeting us in real life went from 15% to a mere 3%!

So, shall we have a Killepitch on Tito for making it thus far?!

Tito this week (week 10)

Tito can now be a suspect of a crime since Tito has already got distinct fingerprints. Mom is doing just fine, bar the few moments the past weekend where she seriously had to consider whether she wants to risk eating. Mostly she's just a cow that basically "eats twice". It might be due to the fact that Tito started moving (can't feel it yet) or apparently is already amazed with its surroundings, trying to grab onto things and it might be grabbing my colon.
Tito has undergone a status change this week too: from embryo to fetus. It will, however, always be just Tito to us. We are also glad to report that Tito is now over the most critical stage in terms of development (from here on only 3% chance of miscarraige), and will from now on mostly grow - hopefully not the head, but the body, since the head is now about half its length (it must have mom's brains...), and need to have some of dad's charactaristics too.
Under the compeleted eyelids we are manufacturing eyes this week, and this is one thing mom hopes Tito will inherit from dad - those big brown eyes (the colour to be determined this week...)
I might also be switching on my placenta this week, so I will become a feeding scheme and a garbage disposal all in one...from now on I am therefore also a guilt-free nibbler, since I am officially "eating for two"!
If all is well, Tito will clock in 4 grams by the end of this week, and be 3.1 cm long...

Back to normal...well, sort off

So, it's back to normal - Elmien is in the Southern hemisphere crafting on her doctorate again, Heiko has finished his last day at Hauch Rechtsanwalte, and Die Groot Trek down south awaits him. The memories of the wedding still leaves us smiling and giggling, and the good news about Tito's eminent arrival in March have kept us from thinking too much about the distance that seperates us until the end of September.

For those who fear facebook, we have posted some photos of the honeymoon at the bottom for your convenience. The wedding photos are "archived", but still accessible by clicking on the dates on the right.

We will keep you up to date with Tito's progress, so watch this space!

Die Flitterwochen ist vorbei

Dear all,

I have received some grumpy emails with demands of more photos while I was busking in the sun in Croatia. So, even though I only have a few photos of the wedding, I will post them all indiscriminately. I'm still waiting for the ones where I look only pretty... and the ones where I look, well, like a bride that had the wedding of her life should look like at 4 a.m.

Happy peeking,

Die (still happy) Braud

ps. the honeymoon was equally fabulous, and now that I have the hang of it, I will see if I can blog some photos of that too. I hope to have an Elmien-style report with some more pictures on my facebook profile soon...

Where are the photos?

To all the  neugierige ones out there that will be taking a peek at the blog while we are on honeymoon in Croatia, sorry to disappoint you.  The wedding was so successful, it knocked me out for a day, and hence there was no time to collect all the pictures.  I have inserted a RSS feed link on the page, and if I understand it correctly, you subscribe and then it will notify you once I put something on the blog.
Those of you who want to send some pictures so that I can put it on the blog can email them to elmienandheiko@gmail.com .
So, we are off to Croatia in a few hours with the memory of an unforgettable wedding!

April 2009 in Südafrika halten.

Kommt also wann Ihr wollt.

"Welcome pack"

We are delighted with your acceptance of our request to attend our hymeneals. In plain language, we are happy that you will share in our wedding celebrations. This then the email with the promised “more information”.

The celebration:
The celebrations will take place at the “Zehntscheune”, “Elsener Haus” also in Grevenbroich. It is next to the St. Stephanus Church where Heiko was baptised and to get to it, you will have to walk around the church on the left side. Please park your car in the big parking lot in front of the Church. Lunch will be in front of the “Zehntscheune”. The actual wedding celebration will start at 7 pm.

There is no formal dressing code, although most people use it as an excuse to make themselves look pretty. But, it remains more important that you get your ass there than it is to dress up that ass. If you have any further questions regarding the celebrations, please do not hesitate to contact us (elmienandheiko@gmail.com). You can also contact Heiko’s brother (best man) Karsten Braun at Karsten.Braun76@web.de.

Photos:
On the evening it would be difficult to be everywhere at once. In fact, it would be impossible. So we thought that if you bring your camera and take some pictures during the evening we can share in your experience of our wedding. We have set up a blog for that reason and also for you to view other people’s pictures of the wedding. So, once you have taken the pictures, you can mail the photos
elmienandheiko@gmail.com and we will publish it on the blog. The photos (and other details, including this email) can be viewed at www.elmienheiko.blogspot.com.

Sleeping arrangements:
For those of you that won’t go home with a local, there are various sleeping arrangements for the Saturday night, ranging from free to quite comfortable. We have arranged a limited amount of rooms at two hotels. We reserved 7 double rooms at Landhotel Lindenhof (
www.landhotel-lindenhof.com) untill 10 June 2008 for EUR 85 a night if we take all 7;as well as 10 double rooms for EUR 75 a night at Hotel Sonderfeld (www.hotel-sonderfeld.de/), directly at the railway station, untill 7 Juli 2008. When you make the booking, remember to tell them “Hochzeit Braun / du Plessis” to get the wedding price. You can also just tell Heiko in advance and he will make the booking for you.

On the cheaper side, there are also Hotel Elsen (www.hotel-elsen.de/), at EUR 68 maybe the cheapest option and conveniently close to the celebration venue; Hotel Haus Laach (www.hotel-haus-laach.de/index.html) or Hotel Alte Schmiede (www.hotel-alte-schmiede.net/).

On the free side, we can accommodate a few people on mattresses in the Kindergarten directly next to the celebration venue. Please make sure to let us know about any bookings you make.

If you make a weekend off it, it might be worth it to stay over in Köln for the Friday night and go for a cold one to the Früh (not too much, though, since you need to spare yourself for the Saturday) and sample some Rheinland cuisine. But that is just a suggestion.

Travelling arrangements:
By car
For those coming with an Auto, you can find the directions on maps.google.de (see the back for links to the maps).

By train
For those coming with the Zug, you need to go to Grevenbroich. It is a 30 minute train ride from Köln. You can book on the Deutsche Bahn website at
www.db.de . If you book the ticket so that there is at least one Saturday between the travels (i.e. Going on Friday and going back on Sunday), then you can travel on a saver price (about 25%-50% cheaper). The tickets are non-changeable / non-refundable, so it is important that you are sure of the dates. Also, it must be booked at least 3 days in advance. So, with a little bit of planning you can save those euros!

By plane
For those flying, low-cost Jumbos:
